CAUTI stands for Catheter-associated urinary tract infection, a hospital abbreviation.
Urinary tract infection in a patient whose indwelling urinary catheter has been in place for more than two days. It is one of the most common healthcare-associated infections.
Example: CAUTI review: catheter day 6, no documented indication after day 2.
Usage notes
Pronounced "caw-tee". Medicare stopped paying extra for hospital-acquired CAUTI in 2008. Avoiding unnecessary catheters and removing them early are the most effective prevention steps. Positive urine cultures without symptoms should not be treated as infection.
