Itemized deduction on the federal return for state and local income or sales taxes plus property taxes. The 2017 tax law capped it at $10,000 per return, and 2025 legislation raised the cap to $40,000 for most filers for several years, with a phase-down at high incomes.
Example: The higher SALT cap means we'll itemize for the first time since 2017.
The cap fell hardest on high-tax states such as New York, New Jersey and California, making "SALT" a political rallying cry. Under the 2025 law the higher cap grows slightly each year and is scheduled to return to $10,000 in 2030. Many states created pass-through entity taxes (PTETs) so business owners could work around the cap. Pronounced like the seasoning.
2. Sort, assess, lifesaving interventions, treatment/transport

Mass casualty triage method that first sorts patients by movement, then assesses individuals, performs quick lifesaving interventions and assigns categories. It was developed as a national all-hazards guideline.
Example: SALT sort: walking wounded directed to green area; still patients assessed first.
Proposed in 2008 by an expert panel supported by the CDC. Lifesaving interventions include hemorrhage control, opening the airway, chest decompression and autoinjector antidotes. It adds an "expectant" category for patients unlikely to survive with available resources.
