1. Rapid sequence intubation

Medical · Emergency Medicine Abbreviations

Technique for emergency airway management in which a sedative induction agent and a paralytic are given in rapid succession, followed by intubation, to minimize the risk of aspiration and secure the airway quickly.

Example: RSI: etomidate 20 mg, rocuronium 100 mg; grade 1 view, 7.5 ETT placed.

Preparation includes preoxygenation, suction, backup airway devices and a plan for failure. Common induction agents are etomidate and ketamine; paralytics include succinylcholine and rocuronium. Confirmation uses waveform capnography. In ergonomics RSI means repetitive strain injury.

2. Relative strength index

Business & Finance · Stock Market & Investing Abbreviations

Momentum oscillator, ranging from 0 to 100, that compares the size of recent gains with recent losses to gauge whether an asset is overbought or oversold. Readings above 70 are traditionally considered overbought and below 30 oversold.

Example: The stock's 14-day RSI hit 82, its most overbought reading in two years.

Developed by J. Welles Wilder Jr. and introduced in his 1978 book New Concepts in Technical Trading Systems. The default calculation uses 14 periods. RSI is unrelated to "relative strength" comparisons between a stock and an index, despite the similar name.
