SAF stands for Sustainable aviation fuel, an energy abbreviation.
Jet fuel made from non-fossil sources such as used cooking oil, animal fats, agricultural waste or synthetic fuels from captured CO2 and green hydrogen, designed to cut life-cycle emissions while working in existing aircraft. Today's certified SAF can be blended with conventional jet fuel up to 50%.
Example: The airline's transatlantic flight used a 30% SAF blend made from waste fats.
Usage notes
SAF made up only around 0.3% of global jet fuel in 2024, but mandates are ramping up: the EU's ReFuelEU rule requires 2% in 2025 and 6% in 2030, and the UK has similar targets. Most SAF today is HEFA fuel from hydrotreated fats and oils. Climate benefits depend heavily on feedstock and accounting.
