1. Renewable energy certificate
Science & Engineering · Energy Abbreviations
Tradable certificate representing the environmental attributes of one megawatt-hour of electricity generated from a renewable source. Utilities use RECs to comply with renewable mandates, and companies buy them to claim renewable electricity use.
Example: The data center's 100% renewable claim is backed by RECs retired from Midwest wind farms.
Europe uses an equivalent system called Guarantees of Origin (GOs), and I-RECs cover many other countries. RECs bought separately from the power ("unbundled") have been criticized because they may not add new renewable capacity. Each REC is tracked by a registry and retired once claimed to prevent double counting.
2. Receptions
Sports · American Football Abbreviations
Number of passes caught by a receiver, running back or tight end. Receptions anchor points-per-reception fantasy scoring and are listed beside receiving yards and touchdowns in box scores.
Example: He finished with 11 REC for 142 yards, both career highs.
Jerry Rice holds the NFL career record with 1,549 receptions, and Michael Thomas set the single-season mark of 149 in 2019. Targets, the passes thrown to a player, are tracked separately as a measure of opportunity.
