1. Request for admission

Law & Legal · Litigation Abbreviations

Written discovery request asking another party to admit the truth of specific facts, the application of law to facts or the genuineness of documents. Admissions narrow the issues for trial and can support summary judgment.

Example: Defendant never answered the RFAs, so each was deemed admitted, including that the invoice was unpaid.

Governed in federal court by Rule 36. A matter is deemed admitted unless the party responds within 30 days, which makes ignoring RFAs dangerous. A party that unreasonably denies a fact later proven may have to pay the cost of proving it. Some states, such as California, limit how many RFAs may be served.

2. Radiofrequency ablation

Medical · Cardiology Abbreviations

Use of heat from high-frequency alternating current, delivered through a catheter tip, to destroy small areas of tissue that cause an arrhythmia. In cardiology it treats SVT, atrial flutter, atrial fibrillation and ventricular tachycardia.

Example: RFA of the cavotricuspid isthmus with bidirectional block achieved.

Lesions are created at roughly 50 to 70 degrees Celsius, and contact-force sensing catheters improve lesion quality. Outside the heart RFA also treats liver and kidney tumors, varicose veins and nerve pain, so the specialty matters. Cryoablation and pulsed field ablation are alternative energy sources.

3. Restricted free agent

Sports · American Football Abbreviations

Free agent whose former team can match any offer sheet from another club or receive draft-pick compensation if it declines. In the NFL, players with three accrued seasons become RFAs when tendered a qualifying offer.

Example: The Rams placed a second-round tender on their RFA linebacker.

NFL tenders are set at first-round, second-round and original-round levels, which determine the compensation. Players with fewer than three seasons are exclusive-rights free agents (ERFA) and can negotiate only with their own team. The NHL and NBA also use restricted free agency with qualifying offers.
