1. Request for proposal
Business & Finance · Management & Strategy Abbreviations · also used in law
Formal document in which an organization describes a project or need and invites vendors to submit detailed proposals covering approach, timeline and price. RFPs suit complex purchases such as IT systems, consulting engagements and construction, where the buyer evaluates more than price before awarding a contract.
Example: Responses to the RFP for our new payroll platform are due by 5 p.m. Eastern on March 14.
An RFP usually follows an RFI (request for information), which gathers general market information, and differs from an RFQ (request for quotation), which asks only for prices on clearly specified items. Government RFPs often have strict submission formats and question deadlines. In the UK and Commonwealth the comparable process is usually called a tender (ITT or RFT).
2. Request for production
Law & Legal · Litigation Abbreviations
Discovery request asking another party to produce documents, electronically stored information or tangible things in its possession, custody or control, or to permit inspection of property. It is the main tool for obtaining emails, contracts, records and data in litigation.
Example: Our second set of RFPs asks for all text messages between the managers about the layoffs.
Governed in federal court by Rule 34; responses are due in 30 days and must state whether responsive materials are being withheld on the basis of objections. Disputes over scope and burden often end in motions to compel. Also called a document request. In procurement, RFP means request for proposal.
3. Renal function panel
Medical · Laboratory Test Abbreviations
Chemistry panel billed under CPT 80069 that bundles albumin, calcium, bicarbonate, chloride, creatinine, glucose, phosphorus, potassium, sodium and BUN. It is the standard monthly or more frequent panel for patients with chronic kidney disease or on dialysis because it adds phosphorus and albumin to the basic metabolic tests.
Example: Monthly dialysis labs: RFP, CBC, PTH quarterly, Kt/V.
Also called a renal panel. Albumin and phosphorus on the RFP guide nutrition counseling and phosphate binder doses in dialysis units. The abbreviation RFP more often means "request for proposal" in business writing, so lab order context is the clue.
