Missile launched from the ground or a ship to destroy aircraft, drones or missiles. SAM systems range from shoulder-fired weapons to long-range batteries such as the Patriot and Russia's S-400.
Example: The pilot evaded two SAMs before egressing the target area.
A Soviet SA-2 SAM shot down Francis Gary Powers's U-2 spy plane in 1960. NATO assigns reporting names and "SA" numbers to Russian SAMs, such as SA-21 Growler for the S-400. Suppressing SAMs is the job of SEAD missions.
2. Serviceable addressable market

Example: Since we only sell in North America and only to dental practices, our SAM is closer to $1.8 billion than the full TAM.
Also expanded as "serviceable available market." It sits between TAM and SOM in the market-sizing slides used in pitch decks and strategy plans. Outside business, SAM can mean software asset management or a surface-to-air missile.
