1. Request for tender
Business & Finance · Management & Strategy Abbreviations
Invitation, mainly in British, Australian and other Commonwealth usage, for suppliers to submit a formal sealed bid to supply goods, services or works under set conditions. Public bodies use tenders to show that contracts are awarded fairly, often advertising the opportunity on an official portal.
Example: The council's RFT for road resurfacing closes at noon on 12 May, and late submissions will not be accepted.
Roughly equivalent to the American RFP or invitation for bid (IFB). Tenders are frequently scored on a mix of price and quality, with the weightings disclosed in the documents. The terms RFT and ITT (invitation to tender) are used almost interchangeably.
2. Run-flat tire
Transportation & Travel · Automotive Abbreviations
Tire with reinforced sidewalls or an internal support that can keep supporting the car for a limited distance after losing air, typically about 50 miles at up to 50 mph. Run-flats let carmakers omit the spare tire.
Example: The RFT got me to the dealer 30 miles away after the nail went in.
BMW and Mini have long fitted run-flat tires as standard. Drivers often complain of a stiffer ride and higher replacement costs. Cars with run-flats must have tire pressure monitoring, since a deflated run-flat can be hard to notice.
