1. Proton pump inhibitor
Medical · Drug Class Abbreviations
Most potent class of stomach acid reducers, including omeprazole, esomeprazole, lansoprazole, pantoprazole and rabeprazole. They treat heartburn, GERD, ulcers and H. pylori infection and protect the stomach in people on NSAIDs or dual antiplatelet therapy.
Example: PPI (omeprazole 20 mg) 30-60 minutes before breakfast x 8 weeks, then reassess.
Omeprazole became available in the US in 1989 and over the counter in 2003. PPIs work best taken before the first meal. Long-term use is associated with C. difficile infection, low magnesium, vitamin B12 deficiency and fractures, prompting deprescribing guidelines. In drug labeling PPI also means patient package insert.
2. Pixels per inch
Technology & Computing · Consumer Electronics Abbreviations · also used in measurement
Measure of display sharpness that counts how many pixels fit along one inch of screen; higher values mean finer detail at a given viewing distance. Phones typically exceed 400 PPI, while desktop monitors range from about 90 to 220.
Example: At 163 PPI, the 27-inch 4K monitor makes text razor sharp.
Apple's iPhone 4 (2010) introduced the "Retina" display at 326 PPI, with Steve Jobs arguing that the eye could not distinguish individual pixels at typical viewing distance. PPI depends on both resolution and screen size: a 1080p panel is 92 PPI at 24 inches but over 400 PPI on a phone. For printers and scanners, DPI is the comparable measure.
3. Producer price index
Business & Finance · Economics Abbreviations
Measure of the average change in prices that domestic producers receive for their output, covering goods, services and construction at various stages of production. It is watched as an early indicator of consumer inflation because cost increases often pass through to retail prices.
Example: Wholesale prices rose 0.4 percent in October, the biggest monthly jump in the PPI since spring.
The US Bureau of Labor Statistics publishes the PPI monthly, with its "final demand" index as the headline measure. It was called the Wholesale Price Index until 1978. In the UK, PPI more commonly refers to payment protection insurance, the subject of a mass mis-selling scandal.
4. Pre-purchase inspection
Transportation & Travel · Automotive Abbreviations
Independent mechanical inspection of a used car before buying, performed by a mechanic chosen by the buyer, typically costing $100 to $250. A PPI can reveal hidden accident damage, leaks and upcoming repairs.
Example: The PPI found a leaking rear main seal, so the seller knocked $1,500 off the price.
Reputable sellers rarely refuse a PPI, so a refusal is a red flag. Specialty shops offer brand-specific inspections for exotic and collectible cars. In economics, PPI means producer price index, and in the UK it often means payment protection insurance.
5. Patient package insert
Medical · Pharmacy Abbreviations
FDA-approved leaflet written for patients and required for some drug classes, notably oral contraceptives and estrogen products, which must be given to the patient with each fill. It is distinct from the professional prescribing information.
Example: Hand the PPI to the patient with every refill of her birth control pills.
Federal regulations made PPIs mandatory for oral contraceptives in 1970 and later for estrogens. Medication Guides, required for drugs with serious risks such as antidepressants and NSAIDs, are a related form of patient labeling. In most medical contexts PPI means proton pump inhibitor.
