SARMs stands for Selective androgen receptor modulators, a drug class abbreviation.

Investigational drugs designed to mimic testosterone's muscle and bone effects with fewer effects on other tissues. None is FDA-approved, but products such as ostarine and ligandrol are sold illegally online as bodybuilding supplements.

Example: Elevated ALT in a 24-year-old using SARMs bought online; advised to stop.

Usage notes

The FDA warned in 2017 that SARMs sold as supplements are linked to liver injury and increased risk of heart attack and stroke. Many products contain different substances than labeled. SARMs are banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency and are a frequent cause of positive tests in athletes.
