SCIT stands for Subcutaneous immunotherapy, a drug class abbreviation.
Allergen immunotherapy given as "allergy shots": gradually increasing injections of pollen, dust mite, animal dander or insect venom extracts, followed by maintenance injections for about three to five years to reduce allergic sensitivity.
Example: SCIT maintenance, cat and grass: 0.5 mL vial 1:1 today; observe 30 minutes.
Usage notes
SCIT is the only allergy treatment that can change the underlying immune response, with benefits lasting years after stopping. Because shots can trigger anaphylaxis, they are given where epinephrine is available and patients are observed for about 30 minutes. Venom immunotherapy greatly reduces the risk of severe sting reactions.
