CategoriesMedical

SARI stands for Serotonin antagonist and reuptake inhibitor, a drug class abbreviation.

Antidepressant class that includes trazodone and nefazodone, which block 5-HT2A receptors and weakly inhibit serotonin reuptake. Trazodone is far more often prescribed at low doses for insomnia than for depression.

Example: Trazodone (SARI) 50 mg at bedtime PRN sleep; caution orthostasis.

Usage notes

Trazodone can rarely cause priapism, a prolonged erection that is a medical emergency. Nefazodone carries a boxed warning for liver failure, and the original brand, Serzone, was withdrawn in the US in 2004, although generics remain. Evidence for trazodone in insomnia is limited despite its popularity.
