1. PGA Tour

Sports · Sports League and Organization Abbreviations

Organizer of the main men's professional golf circuit in North America, running weekly tournaments such as the Players Championship and the season-ending FedEx Cup playoffs. Players earn membership through the Korn Ferry Tour, qualifying school or by winning an event as a non-member.

It does not run the four majors, which are organized by Augusta National Golf Club (the Masters), the PGA of America, the USGA (US Open) and the R&A (the Open Championship). Since 2022 it has competed with the Saudi-funded LIV Golf circuit for star players.

2. Professional Golfers' Association of America

Sports · Sports League and Organization Abbreviations

US association of more than 28,000 club and teaching golf professionals, separate from the PGA Tour. It runs the PGA Championship, one of the four men's major championships, and organizes the Ryder Cup when it is played in the United States.

Example: Her uncle has been a PGA teaching professional at the same country club for twenty years.

Founded on April 10, 1916, in New York City and headquartered in Frisco, Texas, since 2022. Touring professionals broke away in 1968 to form what became the PGA Tour, and the two have been separate organizations ever since. Britain's Professional Golfers' Association, founded in 1901, is older and also separate. In everyday speech "the PGA" usually means the PGA Tour.

3. Prostaglandin analog

Medical · Drug Class Abbreviations

First-line glaucoma eye drops, including latanoprost, bimatoprost, travoprost and tafluprost, that lower eye pressure by increasing fluid outflow. They are used once daily, usually at night.

Example: Start PGA latanoprost 0.005% 1 drop OU nightly; IOP check in 6 weeks.

Latanoprost was approved in the US in 1996 and became the most prescribed glaucoma drug. Side effects include permanent darkening of the iris in some eye colors and longer, thicker eyelashes; bimatoprost is sold as Latisse for eyelash growth. Unopened latanoprost bottles are stored in the refrigerator, but an opened bottle may be kept at room temperature for about six weeks.

4. Pin grid array

Technology & Computing · Computer Hardware Abbreviations

Processor packaging in which pins on the underside of the CPU fit into holes in a motherboard socket. AMD used PGA for desktop chips through the AM4 platform, which ended with the Ryzen 5000 series.

Example: My AM4 Ryzen is a PGA chip, so check for bent pins before seating it.

Before LGA, nearly all desktop CPUs were PGA. A zero-insertion-force (ZIF) lever lets the chip drop in without pressure. Bent PGA pins can often be straightened carefully with a credit card or mechanical pencil, whereas a CPU stuck to its cooler by dried paste may be ripped out of the socket, a mishap builders call "yanking".
