PAMORA stands for Peripherally acting mu-opioid receptor antagonist, a drug class abbreviation.

Drugs that block opioid receptors in the gut but do not cross into the brain, relieving opioid-induced constipation without reversing pain relief. Methylnaltrexone, naloxegol and naldemedine are approved for this use.

Example: OIC despite senna and PEG: PAMORA methylnaltrexone 12 mg subcut every other day.

Usage notes

Alvimopan, another PAMORA, is used in hospitals to speed bowel recovery after surgery and is restricted under a REMS program because of heart attack signals with long-term use. PAMORAs are contraindicated in known or suspected bowel obstruction. Pronounced "pa-MOR-a".
