PWHL stands for Professional Women's Hockey League, a sports league and organization abbreviation.
Top professional women's ice hockey league in North America, launched in January 2024 with six teams in the United States and Canada. Its champion receives the Walter Cup, and the league expanded to eight teams with Seattle and Vancouver for the 2025-26 season.
Example: A crowd of more than 21,000 watched the PWHL game at Montreal's Bell Centre in April 2024.
Usage notes
Formed after investors led by Mark Walter bought and dissolved the Premier Hockey Federation in 2023, uniting the sport's top players in one league with the players' association. The Minnesota Frost won the first Walter Cup in 2024. A "jailbreak" rule ends a minor penalty early when the short-handed team scores.
