USFL stands for United States Football League, a sports league and organization abbreviation.
Spring professional football league that played from 1983 to 1985 with stars such as Herschel Walker, Jim Kelly and Steve Young. A separate league using the name played from 2022 to 2023 before merging with the XFL to form the UFL.
Example: Donald Trump's New Jersey Generals were among the original USFL's highest-spending clubs.
Usage notes
The original league collapsed after it won its 1986 antitrust lawsuit against the NFL but was awarded only $1 in damages, trebled to $3. Its plan to move to a fall schedule had depended on a larger award. The 2022 revival was backed by Fox Sports.
