USL stands for United Soccer League, a sports league and organization abbreviation.
Organization running professional and amateur soccer leagues in the United States, including the second-tier USL Championship, the third-tier USL League One and the women's USL Super League, launched in 2024. It announced in 2025 that promotion and relegation between its men's professional divisions would begin later in the decade.
Example: The club joined the USL Championship after a decade in the amateur leagues.
Usage notes
The second division was simply called the USL until it became the USL Championship in 2019. The USL Super League was sanctioned by US Soccer as a Division I women's league, the same level as the NWSL. The USL system is the main home of American lower-division clubs, many of them independent of MLS.
