SGLT2i stands for Sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitor, a drug class abbreviation.
Oral drugs ending in "-gliflozin", such as empagliflozin, dapagliflozin and canagliflozin, that make the kidneys excrete glucose in the urine. Originally for type 2 diabetes, they now also treat heart failure and chronic kidney disease regardless of diabetes.
Example: Start SGLT2i (dapagliflozin 10 mg daily) for HFrEF per GDMT.
Usage notes
EMPA-REG OUTCOME (2015) first showed cardiovascular benefit, followed by DAPA-HF and DAPA-CKD. Side effects include genital yeast infections and euglycemic diabetic ketoacidosis, so the FDA advises stopping canagliflozin, dapagliflozin and empagliflozin at least 3 days before scheduled surgery. Written SGLT-2i or "gliflozins".
