SNRI stands for Serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor, a drug class abbreviation.
Antidepressants that block reuptake of both serotonin and norepinephrine: venlafaxine, desvenlafaxine, duloxetine, levomilnacipran and milnacipran. Besides depression and anxiety, several are used for chronic pain conditions.
Example: SNRI (duloxetine 60 mg daily) for depression with diabetic neuropathic pain.
Usage notes
Duloxetine is FDA-approved for diabetic nerve pain, fibromyalgia and chronic musculoskeletal pain, and milnacipran only for fibromyalgia. Venlafaxine can raise blood pressure at higher doses and causes notable withdrawal symptoms, including electric "brain zaps", when doses are missed. SNRIs are often tried when an SSRI has not worked.
