TPO-RA stands for Thrombopoietin receptor agonist, a drug class abbreviation.
Drugs that stimulate platelet production by activating the thrombopoietin receptor: weekly injected romiplostim and oral eltrombopag, avatrombopag and lusutrombopag. They treat chronic immune thrombocytopenia, severe aplastic anemia and low platelets before procedures in liver disease.
Example: Chronic ITP, platelets 18K: start TPO-RA eltrombopag 50 mg daily on empty stomach.
Usage notes
Romiplostim and eltrombopag were both approved in 2008. Eltrombopag must be separated by about four hours from dairy, calcium and antacids, which bind it, and it can affect the liver. Platelet counts are monitored to avoid excessive rises, which can cause clots.
