1. Adjusted gross income
Business & Finance · Tax Abbreviations
Total income from wages, interest, business profits and other sources minus specific "above-the-line" adjustments such as deductible IRA contributions, HSA contributions, student loan interest and half of self-employment tax. It appears on Form 1040 and drives eligibility for many credits and deductions.
Example: To e-file, enter last year's AGI exactly as it appears on your prior return.
AGI is calculated before the standard or itemized deduction, so it is higher than taxable income. Many tax benefits phase out based on AGI or a modified version of it. Tax software asks for prior-year AGI because the IRS uses it as an electronic signature check. Lenders and financial aid offices often request the figure as well.
2. Artificial general intelligence
Technology & Computing · Artificial Intelligence Abbreviations
A hypothetical AI system able to understand, learn and perform any intellectual task a human can, across domains, rather than excelling only at narrow tasks. Reaching AGI is the stated goal of labs such as OpenAI and Google DeepMind.
Example: Researchers disagree sharply on whether AGI is years or decades away, or whether the term is even well defined.
The phrase was popularized in the early 2000s by researchers including Ben Goertzel and Shane Legg. There is no agreed test, and companies define it differently; OpenAI's charter describes highly autonomous systems that outperform humans at most economically valuable work. Debates about AGI timelines and risks drive much of today's AI safety research. On US tax returns, AGI means adjusted gross income.
3. Alpha-glucosidase inhibitor
Medical · Drug Class Abbreviations
Diabetes drugs acarbose and miglitol that slow the breakdown of starches and sugars in the intestine, reducing spikes in blood glucose after meals. They are taken with the first bite of each meal.
Example: Acarbose (AGI) 25 mg TID with first bite of meals; titrate for bloating.
Flatulence and diarrhea limit their use in Western countries, but acarbose is widely used in China and other Asian countries. If a patient on an alpha-glucosidase inhibitor becomes hypoglycemic from another drug, the low must be treated with glucose (dextrose), because table sugar is digested too slowly.
