1. Post-void residual

Medical · Nephrology & Urology Abbreviations

Volume of urine left in the bladder immediately after voiding, measured with a portable bladder scanner or by catheterization. Elevated values indicate incomplete emptying from prostate enlargement, weak bladder muscle, nerve damage or medications.

Example: PVR 450 mL on bladder scan after voiding; straight cath and start tamsulosin.

Thresholds vary, but residuals above roughly 100–200 mL are often considered elevated, and volumes several hundred mL suggest retention. Anticholinergics, opioids and anesthesia commonly cause retention. In cardiology PVR means pulmonary vascular resistance, a completely different measurement. Pronounced as letters.

2. Puerto Vallarta International Airport

Transportation & Travel · Airport Code Abbreviations

Airport serving Puerto Vallarta and Riviera Nayarit on Mexico's Pacific coast, located about 7 kilometers north of the city center.

Example: PVR to the Marina is a short taxi ride, but walk across the highway for cheaper cabs.

ICAO code MMPR. Officially Licenciado Gustavo Díaz Ordaz International Airport, named for a former Mexican president. Arriving tourists are told to walk past the "shark tank" of timeshare sellers.

3. Pulmonary vascular resistance

Medical · Cardiology Abbreviations

Resistance to blood flow through the lungs, calculated during right heart catheterization as the difference between mean pulmonary artery pressure and wedge pressure, divided by cardiac output. A PVR above 2 Wood units is part of the definition of precapillary pulmonary hypertension.

Example: PVR 6.4 Wood units with mPAP 44 and a normal wedge: group 1 PAH confirmed.

The 2022 ESC/ERS pulmonary hypertension guidelines lowered the PVR threshold from 3 to 2 Wood units. A high, fixed PVR is a contraindication to heart transplantation because the donor right ventricle may fail. In urology and nursing PVR usually means post-void residual, the urine left in the bladder after voiding.

4. Personal video recorder

Technology & Computing · Consumer Electronics Abbreviations

Term for a digital video recorder, more common in the UK, Canada and Australia, describing set-top boxes and TVs that record broadcasts to an internal or USB hard drive.

Example: Plug a USB drive into the TV and it works as a PVR for Freeview channels.

Sky+ boxes, launched in 2001, popularized the PVR in Britain. Many TVs offer "USB PVR" recording, though recordings are usually encrypted and play only on the same set. The terms PVR and DVR describe the same technology; usage depends mainly on region and manufacturer.
