RALP stands for Robot-assisted laparoscopic prostatectomy, a nephrology & urology abbreviation.
Radical prostatectomy performed with a surgical robot through small abdominal incisions, now the most common approach for prostate cancer surgery in the US. Benefits over open surgery include less blood loss and shorter hospital stays.
Example: Grade group 3 prostate cancer, cT2a; plan RALP with bilateral nerve sparing.
Usage notes
Also written RARP (robot-assisted radical prostatectomy). The da Vinci system popularized the approach after 2000. Long-term continence and erectile outcomes depend more on surgeon experience and nerve sparing than on technique alone. A catheter stays in for about a week afterward.
