RAS stands for Renal artery stenosis, a nephrology & urology abbreviation.

Narrowing of one or both renal arteries, causing renovascular hypertension and sometimes ischemic kidney damage. Atherosclerosis is the cause in most older adults, while fibromuscular dysplasia affects mainly younger women.

Example: Resistant hypertension and creatinine rise after starting ACE inhibitor; duplex ultrasound for RAS.

Usage notes

Flash pulmonary edema and a sharp creatinine rise after starting an ACE inhibitor or ARB are classic clues. The CORAL trial (2014) found that stenting atherosclerotic RAS added no benefit over medical therapy for most patients, while angioplasty remains effective for fibromuscular dysplasia. In pharmacology RAS also refers to the renin-angiotensin system.
