PKD stands for Polycystic kidney disease, a nephrology & urology abbreviation.
Inherited disorder in which fluid-filled cysts gradually enlarge both kidneys, raising blood pressure and eventually causing kidney failure. The autosomal dominant form (ADPKD) affects adults, while the rarer recessive form (ARPKD) appears in infancy.
Example: Strong family history of PKD; renal ultrasound shows multiple bilateral cysts at age 29.
Usage notes
Pronounced as letters. PKD is among the most common inherited kidney diseases and a frequent reason for dialysis. Cysts may also form in the liver, and patients with the dominant form have a higher risk of brain aneurysms. Acquired cystic kidney disease, seen after years of dialysis, is a different condition.
