1. Senior leadership team
Business & Finance · Management & Strategy Abbreviations
Top management group of an organization, including the chief executive or principal and senior function heads, responsible for strategy and major decisions. The term is widely used in UK businesses, charities, government bodies and schools.
Example: The SLT has approved the hybrid-working policy, effective from 1 September.
In UK schools, the SLT consists of the head teacher, deputy heads and assistant heads. In US companies the term is used alongside ELT and executive team. In healthcare, SLT can mean speech and language therapy, an unrelated meaning.
2. Selective laser trabeculoplasty
Medical · Ophthalmology & ENT Abbreviations
Laser treatment for open-angle glaucoma that applies low-energy pulses to the eye's drainage tissue (trabecular meshwork), improving outflow and lowering pressure. It takes minutes in the office and can be repeated.
Example: SLT 360 degrees OD, 100 spots; IOP check in 6 weeks.
The FDA cleared SLT in 2001. The UK LiGHT trial (2019) found it an effective first-line alternative to eye drops, with many patients drop-free years later. "Selective" means it targets pigmented cells while sparing surrounding tissue, unlike the older argon laser trabeculoplasty.
3. Sub-Lieutenant (SLt)
Military · British Military Rank Abbreviations
Junior commissioned rank in the Royal Navy and several Commonwealth navies, NATO grade OF-1, equivalent to an army second lieutenant or lieutenant. Sub-lieutenants serve as junior bridge watchkeepers and divisional officers.
Example: SLt Okonkwo earned her bridge watchkeeping certificate within a year aboard HMS Kent.
The insignia is a single gold sleeve stripe with the executive curl. Royal Navy officers below lieutenant commander are addressed simply by their surname or rank in many settings. The US Navy equivalent grades are ensign and lieutenant junior grade.
