1. Sleep-disordered breathing
Medical · Respiratory Abbreviations
Umbrella term for abnormal breathing during sleep, covering snoring, upper airway resistance, obstructive and central sleep apnea, and sleep-related hypoventilation. It is used when screening patients or when the specific type has not yet been determined.
Example: Child with snoring, mouth breathing and large tonsils: SDB, ENT and sleep study referrals.
In children, sleep-disordered breathing is often caused by enlarged tonsils and adenoids and can contribute to behavior problems, poor school performance and bedwetting; adenotonsillectomy is the usual treatment. In adults, it is common in heart failure, stroke and obesity. Polysomnography distinguishes the specific types.
2. Small Diameter Bomb
Military · Weapon and Military Equipment Abbreviations
GBU-39 precision-guided glide bomb of about 250 pounds, designed so aircraft can carry more weapons and reduce collateral damage. The later GBU-53/B StormBreaker adds a multimode seeker for moving targets.
Example: Each F-15E can carry over a dozen SDBs for strikes in crowded urban areas.
SDBs glide long distances after release, extending standoff range. A ground-launched variant, GLSDB, pairs the bomb with a rocket motor. Smaller warheads limit damage to nearby buildings. Its narrow body lets four bombs fit on a single rack.
3. Salesians of Don Bosco
Religion · Religious Title Abbreviations
Salesian priests and brothers belong to a congregation founded in Turin in 1859 by St. John Bosco to educate poor and working-class boys. Today Salesians run schools, youth centers and vocational programs in over 130 countries.
Example: The youth center is run by two SDB priests and a team of lay volunteers.
From the Latin Societas Sancti Francisci Salesii, named for St. Francis de Sales. Don Bosco's approach to education, the Preventive System, relies on reason, religion and kindness. The Salesian Sisters (FMA) are the female branch.
