1. Sliding board transfer

Medical · Rehabilitation Abbreviations

Transfer using a smooth board bridging two surfaces, such as bed and wheelchair, across which the patient slides while seated. It is used by people who cannot stand, including many with spinal cord injury or amputations.

Example: SBT bed to w/c with Min A; independent board placement.

Also written "slide board transfer". Wheelchairs with removable armrests are needed. In respiratory care SBT means spontaneous breathing trial, a test of readiness to come off a ventilator.

2. Spontaneous breathing trial

Medical · Respiratory Abbreviations

Test of readiness to come off the ventilator, in which support is reduced to minimal pressure support or a T-piece for 30 to 120 minutes while breathing rate, oxygenation, heart rate, blood pressure and comfort are monitored. Passing the trial usually leads to extubation.

Example: Passed 30-minute SBT on PS 5/PEEP 5; follows commands, strong cough: extubated.

Daily SBTs paired with spontaneous awakening trials (SATs) shorten time on the ventilator. Failure signs include rapid shallow breathing, falling oxygen saturation, agitation and sweating. Patients at high risk of failure may be extubated directly to high-flow nasal oxygen or noninvasive ventilation. In rehabilitation SBT means sliding board transfer.
