TAM stands for Total addressable market, a management & strategy abbreviation.

Total revenue opportunity available if a product captured 100 percent of its market, calculated from the number of potential customers multiplied by annual spend per customer. Startups and investors use TAM to judge whether a market is large enough to support a big company.

Example: Our TAM is roughly $12 billion: 400,000 mid-size clinics spending about $30,000 a year on scheduling software.

Usage notes

Usually presented with SAM and SOM as a set of nested circles, each smaller than the last. Top-down TAM estimates start from industry reports, while bottom-up estimates multiply customer counts by price and are generally considered more credible. Pronounced as a word or as letters.
