1. Primary sclerosing cholangitis

Medical · Gastroenterology Abbreviations

Chronic disease in which inflammation and scarring narrow the bile ducts inside and outside the liver, producing a "beaded" appearance on MRCP. Roughly two-thirds of patients also have inflammatory bowel disease, usually ulcerative colitis, and there is no proven drug therapy, so transplant is the definitive treatment.

Example: MRCP shows multifocal intrahepatic strictures typical of PSC; annual surveillance colonoscopy given coexisting UC.

PSC raises the risk of cholangiocarcinoma, gallbladder cancer and colorectal cancer, so patients undergo regular imaging and colonoscopy. Unlike PBC, it mainly affects men. Secondary sclerosing cholangitis has an identifiable cause, such as prior surgery, ischemia or IgG4-related disease, which must be excluded first.

2. Postal Service Center

Geography & Places · US Territory and Military Mail Abbreviations

Line in Air Force and some joint-service overseas addresses, followed by a number and a box, as in PSC 3 Box 1234, APO AP 96266. Each PSC is a consolidated mailroom that sorts and holds mail for personnel on an installation.

Example: Write PSC 3 Box 1234 on the line directly below the service member's name.

The PSC line replaces any street address; adding the base name or host-country city can misroute the item. PSC also abbreviates Public Service Commission, the utility regulator in many US states.

3. Plaintiffs' steering committee

Law & Legal · Litigation Abbreviations

Group of plaintiffs' lawyers appointed by the judge in a multidistrict litigation or other consolidated proceeding to manage discovery, motions, bellwether trials and settlement negotiations on behalf of all plaintiffs. Members are typically paid through a common benefit fund.

Example: The PSC served master discovery requests on all defendants on behalf of the thousands of plaintiffs.

Appointment to MDL leadership is competitive, and judges weigh experience, resources and diversity. A common benefit assessment, often a few percent of each recovery, pays for the committee's work. Defendants may organize a parallel defense steering committee.
