1. Armed Forces Europe

Geography & Places · US Territory and Military Mail Abbreviations

State-position code for APO, FPO and DPO mail to Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Canada, with ZIP codes from 090 to 098. It covers installations from Germany and Italy to Bahrain, Djibouti and Kuwait.

Example: Many online retailers now accept APO AE addresses at checkout and charge domestic shipping.

Although the name says Europe, AE also covers the Middle East, Africa and Canada. As an ISO country code AE is the United Arab Emirates, so international software sometimes misreads military addresses as shipments to the UAE. AE also means adverse event in clinical research.

2. Account executive

Business & Finance · Job Title Abbreviations

Sales professional who manages the later stages of the sales process, running demos, negotiating and closing deals with prospective customers against a revenue quota. In advertising and public relations, an AE instead manages day-to-day client relationships.

Example: Our AEs each carry a $900,000 annual quota for new mid-market customers.

In software sales, AEs usually receive qualified meetings from SDRs or BDRs and hand signed customers to account managers or customer success. Compensation commonly splits around 50/50 between base salary and commission at target. Titles range from junior AE to enterprise AE.

3. Adverse event

Medical · Pharmacology Abbreviations

Any harmful or unwanted medical occurrence in a patient or trial participant given a drug, whether or not it is caused by the drug. Clinical trials record all AEs, then assess which may be related.

Example: Most common AEs were nausea (22%) and headache (15%), mostly grade 1.

The distinction between an "event" and a "reaction" is central to drug safety: an AE is recorded regardless of causality, while an adverse drug reaction implies a plausible causal link. Definitions are harmonized internationally by the ICH E2A guideline. AE in other fields can mean account executive.

4. United Arab Emirates

Geography & Places · Country Code Abbreviations

Two-letter ISO code for the United Arab Emirates, taken from Arab Emirates; the alpha-3 code is ARE. Emirati IBANs begin with AE, websites use .ae, and banks in Dubai and Abu Dhabi quote it in SWIFT codes.

Example: Select AE as the destination country to see shipping rates to Dubai.

News and sports writers use UAE instead. In US addresses, AE after APO, FPO or DPO means Armed Forces Europe, a military mail region, not the Emirates.

5. Almost everywhere (a.e.)

Units & Measurements · Math Abbreviations

Measure-theory phrase meaning a property holds except on a set of measure zero, such as a finite or countable set of points. Two functions that are equal a.e. have the same Lebesgue integral.

Example: The function f is 0 a.e., so its integral over [0, 1] is 0.

Probability theory uses the equivalent "almost surely" (a.s.). For example, the indicator function of the rational numbers is zero a.e., because the rationals have Lebesgue measure zero. The idea underpins the Lebesgue integral, introduced by Henri Lebesgue in 1902.

6. Aviation Electrician's Mate

Military · US Navy and Coast Guard Rating Abbreviations

Technicians responsible for aircraft electrical power generation and distribution, lighting, batteries, flight instruments and navigation systems on Navy and Marine Corps aircraft. They troubleshoot wiring faults and maintain inertial navigation and automatic flight control components.

Example: AE3 Castillo traced the intermittent warning light to a chafed wire bundle.

AEs work at squadron and intermediate maintenance levels and often qualify as collateral-duty inspectors. Their skills overlap with those of the aviation electronics technician (AT), but AEs focus on electrical power and basic flight systems rather than radar, communications and weapons electronics.
