MRCP stands for Magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography, a gastroenterology abbreviation.
Noninvasive MRI technique that uses heavily T2-weighted images to show the bile ducts, gallbladder and pancreatic duct without contrast injection or endoscopy. It is used to look for bile duct stones, strictures, primary sclerosing cholangitis and pancreatic cysts before deciding whether ERCP is needed.
Example: Intermediate probability of CBD stone; MRCP ordered before considering ERCP.
Usage notes
Because stationary fluid appears bright, the ducts stand out against darker tissue. Secretin may be given to improve pancreatic duct visualization. Unlike ERCP it carries no risk of pancreatitis but cannot treat what it finds. Pacemakers and some metal implants may preclude the scan.
