MASLD stands for Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease, a gastroenterology abbreviation.
Current name, adopted in 2023, for hepatic steatosis in a person with at least one cardiometabolic risk factor, such as excess weight, raised glucose, high blood pressure, high triglycerides or low HDL, and no other cause. It replaced NAFLD and is the most common chronic liver disease worldwide.
Example: MASLD with FibroScan stiffness of 11 kPa; discuss 10 percent weight-loss target and resmetirom eligibility.
Usage notes
MASLD sits under the umbrella term steatotic liver disease (SLD), alongside MetALD and alcohol-related liver disease. In March 2024 resmetirom became the first FDA-approved drug for noncirrhotic MASH with moderate to advanced fibrosis. Sustained weight loss of 7–10 percent improves inflammation and fibrosis. Usually spoken letter by letter.
