CategoriesMedical

IBS-D stands for Irritable bowel syndrome with predominant diarrhea, a gastroenterology abbreviation.

IBS subtype in which more than 25 percent of bowel movements are loose or watery (Bristol types 6–7) and fewer than 25 percent are hard. Workup usually excludes celiac disease and sometimes bile acid diarrhea; treatments include loperamide, rifaximin, eluxadoline and a low-FODMAP diet.

Example: Postinfectious IBS-D after travelers' diarrhea last spring; rifaximin 550 mg TID for 14 days started.

Usage notes

The FDA approved both rifaximin and eluxadoline for IBS-D in 2015. Postinfectious IBS, which follows an episode of bacterial gastroenteritis, most often takes the diarrhea-predominant form. Alosetron is restricted to women with severe IBS-D because of rare ischemic colitis and serious constipation.
