HIDA stands for Hepatobiliary iminodiacetic acid scan, a gastroenterology abbreviation.
Nuclear medicine scan that tracks a radioactive tracer as the liver excretes it into the bile ducts, gallbladder and small intestine. Failure to fill the gallbladder suggests acute cholecystitis, and a low gallbladder ejection fraction after stimulation supports functional gallbladder disorder.
Example: HIDA: gallbladder not visualized at 4 hours, consistent with acute cholecystitis.
Usage notes
Also called cholescintigraphy. Morphine can be given to shorten the test by contracting the sphincter of Oddi. An ejection fraction below about 35–40 percent after cholecystokinin is considered abnormal. It can also detect bile leaks after cholecystectomy. Pronounced "HIGH-dah".
