LGIB stands for Lower gastrointestinal bleeding, a gastroenterology abbreviation.
Bleeding that originates in the colon or rectum, presenting with bright red or maroon stool. Diverticulosis is the most common cause in adults, followed by angiodysplasia, colitis, hemorrhoids and post-polypectomy bleeding; most episodes stop spontaneously.
Example: Painless LGIB in 78-year-old with known diverticulosis; CTA abdomen to localize, colonoscopy after prep.
Usage notes
Bleeding from the small bowel between the ampulla and the ileocecal valve, once lumped with LGIB, is now often called middle GI bleeding and investigated with capsule endoscopy. A brisk upper source can mimic LGIB, so an unstable patient with hematochezia may need an EGD first. The Oakland score helps identify patients safe for outpatient management.
