EGD stands for Esophagogastroduodenoscopy, a gastroenterology abbreviation.
Upper endoscopy in which a flexible camera is passed through the mouth to examine the esophagus, stomach and first part of the duodenum. It diagnoses and treats bleeding, ulcers, reflux complications, varices and strictures and allows biopsies, usually under moderate or deep sedation.
Example: EGD today: LA grade B esophagitis, 3 cm hiatal hernia, gastric biopsies for H. pylori.
Usage notes
Pronounced as letters; patients often call it an upper endoscopy or "upper scope". The procedure typically takes 10–20 minutes and requires fasting beforehand. The British term is OGD, from oesophagogastroduodenoscopy. Billing codes distinguish diagnostic EGD from EGD with biopsy, dilation, banding or hemostasis.
