1. Equal opportunity employer
Business & Finance · Human Resources Abbreviations · also used in general use
Statement in job advertisements declaring that an employer does not discriminate in hiring or employment on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability or other legally protected characteristics. Federal law protects these traits whether or not the statement appears.
Example: We are an EOE and welcome applications from all qualified candidates.
The phrase reflects Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and later laws such as the Age Discrimination in Employment Act and the Americans with Disabilities Act. Ads sometimes extend it to "EOE/AA/M/F/D/V" (affirmative action, minorities, females, disabled, veterans). The statement is mainly a signal, since the obligations apply to all covered employers regardless.
2. Eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE)
Medical · Gastroenterology Abbreviations
Chronic allergic inflammation of the esophagus defined by at least 15 eosinophils per high-power field on biopsy plus symptoms of esophageal dysfunction. Adults typically present with trouble swallowing or food getting stuck; children with feeding difficulty or vomiting. Treatments include elimination diets, PPIs, swallowed topical steroids and dupilumab.
Example: Food impaction in 24-year-old with asthma; biopsies show 40 eos/hpf, consistent with EoE.
Written with a lowercase o to separate it from other "EE" terms such as erosive esophagitis. It was recognized as a distinct disease in the early 1990s and its prevalence has risen sharply since. Dupilumab became the first FDA-approved EoE drug in 2022, followed by budesonide oral suspension in 2024. Endoscopy may show stacked rings, linear furrows and white exudates.
