1. Employee resource group
Business & Finance · Human Resources Abbreviations
Voluntary, employee-led group that brings together workers who share an identity, background or interest, such as women in engineering, veterans, parents or LGBTQ+ employees, to offer networking, mentoring and feedback to leadership.
Example: The veterans ERG is hosting a resume workshop for military spouses.
Often traced to Xerox, where Black employees formed a national caucus in 1970 with support from CEO Joseph Wilson. ERGs are also called affinity groups or business resource groups. Lawyers advise keeping them open to all employees, since membership limited by protected characteristics can raise discrimination concerns.
2. Emergency Response Guidebook
Government & Politics · Emergency Services Abbreviations
Guide published by the US Department of Transportation, with Canada and Mexico, that helps first responders identify hazardous materials by UN number or name and decide protective actions and evacuation distances. A new edition is released every four years.
Example: Look up UN 1017 in the ERG; it's chlorine, guide 124, so expand the isolation zone.
Its color-coded sections are yellow (by UN number), blue (by name), orange (response guides) and green (isolation distances). It is carried in most fire engines and police cars. Free mobile apps provide the same content.
