CEO stands for Chief executive officer, a job title abbreviation.
Highest-ranking executive in a company, responsible for overall strategy, major decisions, resource allocation and the organization's performance. The CEO reports to the board of directors, which appoints and can dismiss them, and is the main public face of the company to investors, employees and the media.
Example: The board named its CFO as interim CEO after the founder stepped down on Monday.
Usage notes
Pronounced as letters. In many US companies the CEO also serves as board chair, a combination critics say weakens oversight; the UK Corporate Governance Code recommends separating the two roles. In the UK and Commonwealth, the equivalent title is sometimes managing director (MD). Under the Sarbanes-Oxley Act, the CEO of a US public company personally certifies its financial reports together with the CFO.
