1. European Medicines Agency

Medical · Medical Research Abbreviations · also used in government

European Union agency responsible for the scientific evaluation, supervision and safety monitoring of medicines, issuing opinions on which the European Commission bases marketing authorizations valid across EU member states. Its Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use (CHMP) gives the key recommendations.

Example: EMA's CHMP adopted a positive opinion; Commission approval is expected within about two months.

Established in 1995, the agency moved from London to Amsterdam in 2019 after the UK's decision to leave the EU. Pharmacovigilance is overseen by its PRAC committee. Some products are authorized nationally rather than through the centralized EMA procedure.

2. Emergency management agency

Government & Politics · Emergency Services Abbreviations

State or local government agency responsible for planning for, coordinating response to and recovering from disasters, such as a county EMA or a state agency like the Georgia Emergency Management Agency.

Example: The county EMA opened shelters at two schools before the storm made landfall.

Names vary: some jurisdictions use Office of Emergency Management (OEM) or Department of Emergency Services. State EMAs request federal assistance from FEMA. In Europe, EMA usually refers to the European Medicines Agency.

3. Exponential moving average

Business & Finance · Stock Market & Investing Abbreviations

Moving average that gives greater weight to the most recent prices, so it responds faster to new information than a simple moving average. The 12-day and 26-day EMAs are the basis of the MACD indicator.

Example: Price bounced off the 21-day EMA, which has acted as support throughout the uptrend.

The weighting multiplier equals 2 divided by the number of periods plus one. Short-term traders favor EMAs for their responsiveness, though they generate more false signals in choppy markets. In pharmaceutical regulation, EMA is the European Medicines Agency.
