EBM stands for Evidence-based medicine, a medical research abbreviation.
Approach to clinical practice that integrates the best available research evidence with clinical expertise and patient values when making decisions about individual patients. It emphasizes systematically appraising studies rather than relying on authority or tradition alone.
Example: EBM journal club: critically appraising the new anticoagulation trial with the GRADE framework.
Usage notes
The term was coined by Gordon Guyatt at McMaster University around 1990 and spread widely after a 1992 JAMA article from the Evidence-Based Medicine Working Group. David Sackett's 1996 definition stressed the "conscientious, explicit and judicious use of current best evidence". Nursing and allied fields use the related term evidence-based practice (EBP).
