DALY stands for Disability-adjusted life year, a medical research abbreviation.
Measure of disease burden equal to one lost year of healthy life, calculated as years of life lost to premature death plus years lived with disability. It allows the burden of different diseases and injuries to be compared across countries and over time.
Example: Ischemic heart disease ranked first in global DALYs in the latest burden study.
Usage notes
The DALY was introduced in the World Bank's 1993 World Development Report and the Global Burden of Disease project and is used by the WHO and the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation. QALYs measure health gained, whereas DALYs measure health lost. Pronounced "DAH-lee".
