1. Estimated date of confinement
Medical · Obstetrics & Gynecology Abbreviations
Older term for a pregnancy's due date, identical in meaning to EDD. "Confinement" refers to the traditional period of lying-in around childbirth.
Example: Prenatal record: G1P0, EDC 11/08, uncomplicated course to date.
EDC remains common on older forms, some electronic records and in long-practicing clinicians' notes. Both EDC and EDD are calculated the same way, usually 280 days from the last menstrual period. Pronounced as letters.
2. Electronic data capture
Medical · Medical Research Abbreviations
Software system that collects clinical trial data through electronic case report forms, with built-in edit checks, query management and audit trails. EDC replaced paper case report forms in most trials during the 2000s.
Example: Enter the lab values into EDC within five days of each visit.
Systems used for FDA-regulated trials must comply with 21 CFR Part 11, issued in 1997, on electronic records and signatures. Commercial platforms dominate industry trials, while REDCap, developed at Vanderbilt University, is widely used in academic research. In some studies data flow directly from electronic health records.
3. Electric Daisy Carnival
Arts & Entertainment · Music Abbreviations
Large electronic dance music festival produced by Insomniac Events, held each May at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway and in other cities including Orlando and Mexico City. Known for carnival rides and elaborate stages.
Example: We camped out at EDC Las Vegas for three nights of music.
First held in Los Angeles in 1997. It moved from the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum to Las Vegas in 2011 after a teenager's death at the 2010 event led to scrutiny. Attendance runs to hundreds of thousands over three nights.
