EFW stands for Estimated fetal weight, an obstetrics & gynecology abbreviation.
Fetal weight calculated from ultrasound measurements of the head, abdomen and femur, expressed in grams and as a percentile for gestational age. It is used to detect growth restriction or macrosomia and to plan timing and mode of delivery.
Example: EFW 3,950 g (92nd percentile) at 37 weeks in patient with GDM; discuss delivery timing.
Usage notes
Ultrasound estimates typically have an error of about 10 to 15 percent, larger at the extremes of weight. Fetal growth restriction is commonly defined as an EFW or abdominal circumference below the 10th percentile. Clinical estimates by palpation (Leopold maneuvers) are less accurate.
