FGR stands for Fetal growth restriction, an obstetrics & gynecology abbreviation.
Failure of a fetus to reach its growth potential, defined by the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine as an estimated fetal weight or abdominal circumference below the 10th percentile. Severity is assessed with Doppler studies of the umbilical artery.
Example: FGR, EFW 3rd percentile with absent end-diastolic flow; admit, steroids, deliver at 32 weeks.
Usage notes
The 2020 SMFM guideline replaced IUGR with FGR in US practice. Early-onset FGR (before 32 weeks) is typically more severe and linked to placental disease. Delivery timing balances the risks of prematurity against stillbirth. Low-dose aspirin may help prevent it in high-risk pregnancies.
