IUGR stands for Intrauterine growth restriction, an obstetrics & gynecology abbreviation.
Older term for a fetus that is not growing to its expected size, usually defined as an estimated fetal weight below the 10th percentile. Causes include placental insufficiency, maternal hypertension, smoking, infections and genetic conditions.
Example: IUGR with EFW 6th percentile; umbilical artery Doppler weekly.
Usage notes
Many organizations now prefer "fetal growth restriction" (FGR), partly because "intrauterine" is redundant and "IUGR" was confused with small for gestational age. Growth-restricted babies may face low blood sugar and breathing problems after birth. IUGR remains common in older records and patient materials.
