IUD stands for Intrauterine device, an obstetrics & gynecology abbreviation.
Small T-shaped device placed in the uterus for contraception: copper IUDs work by creating an environment toxic to sperm, while hormonal IUDs release levonorgestrel. They are among the most effective reversible contraceptives and can last from 3 to 10 or more years.
Example: LNG-IUD 52 mg inserted without complication; strings visible, follow-up in 6 weeks.
Usage notes
A copper IUD inserted within five days of unprotected sex is the most effective form of emergency contraception. Hormonal IUDs also reduce heavy menstrual bleeding. Also called IUS (intrauterine system) for hormonal devices in British usage. Perforation of the uterus during insertion is rare.
