CategoriesMedical

HRT stands for Hormone replacement therapy, an obstetrics & gynecology abbreviation.

Treatment with estrogen, usually with a progestogen if the uterus is present, to relieve menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes, night sweats and vaginal dryness and to prevent bone loss. Also used for early menopause or ovarian insufficiency.

Example: Severe hot flashes, age 51; start HRT with transdermal estradiol and micronized progesterone, review yearly.

Usage notes

The Women's Health Initiative trial, stopped early in 2002, reported increased breast cancer, stroke and clot risks with combined therapy, causing a sharp drop in use. Later analyses showed risks depend on age and timing, with a more favorable balance for women under 60 or within 10 years of menopause. Many experts now prefer "menopausal hormone therapy" (MHT). HRT also refers to gender-affirming hormone therapy in some contexts.
